Andrew and Bill both made some great points about
the state of CPM advertising. I'm going to jump in
and probably embarrass myself, since my site is
user-supported and I'm not too comfortable with
the jargon used in this most cool of groups.
It seems to me Andrew and Bill are creeping around a
business model that will make someone a lot of money,
given a sizable investment in either time or money:
an agency specializing in targeted ads. I could profit
from such an agency as both an advertiser and a
publisher. My site is ebay-related, and as such
attracts mostly collectors of all kinds and buyers of
electronics & computer goods. With something like 4
million impressions per month, my site would be a good
place to advertise to eBay buyers.
But more to the point I'd like to be able to visit a
site and use something like the Google Adwords software
to be able to purchase ad space in bulk on sites that
appeal to collectors and electronics & computer goods.
That is, I'd like to be able to click a bunch of
checkboxes for these areas, then let the software
figure out what publishers would be best, and route the
ads to them automatically.
I am certain that someone willing to put a couple of
years and some inexpensive contract programming into it
will be paid off handsomely.
