I can see a problem in terms of labor if you go with
http://subbrand.lifeway.com

It should take far less time to create a directory such as
http://www.lifeway.com/subbrand/

Also depending on how you analyze traffic there can be
benefits to going with the http://www.lifeway.com/subbrand/
route. As most traffic analysis tools are built with
directory structures in mind, not multiple URLs.

Now if you are Yahoo or MSN there maybe benefits but they
have a heck of a lot of labor time to throw at this and
likely are not using off the shelf solutions.
