Re: URL Structures in Advertising?
Steve -- you might want to check out this tidbit that I
found on the IBM web site ... try to track down the source.
In a survey of 69 people (don't know the details) ...
when asked to find "Acme Widget" ... they wanted to use a
URL that was the **product name** not the company name.
It's in this section (somewhere - I forget where -
sorry!) <http://www-3.ibm.com/ibm/easy/eou_ext.nsf/Publish/558> ...
probably the web design guidelines.
They (the surveyed people) seemed to prefer ....
lifeway.subbrand.com .... if I read the results correctly.
It's possible that I misinterpreted .... but I really have
no idea how many "lay" people understand the changing of
the "www" to something else. I have enough
trouble getting some of my web students to understand!
I find the suggestion that the corporate name is the best
or the only route a short-sighted one. For example, if I want
to go to Dreamweaver ... I'd rather go to dreamweaver.com
than to macromedia.com and search for it. And so when I type
http://www.dreamweaver.com/ .... the miracles of redirect send
me to <http://www.macromedia.com/software/dreamweaver/>.
At a minimum, I'd suggest trying to capture URLs for the
products (assuming that they are available!) and have them
point to whatever schema the powers-that-be declare.
