Re: Yahoo (Price) Surprise!
I look at the directory services vs. spidering search engines
this way, the directory is good for finding sites and the
spiders are good for rooting out more detailed information
from the Web pages.
For example, one of our clients reports that a page on their
site, which lists popular equipment product numbers, brings
the most traffic to their site. If you were to search the
Yahoo (or any other directory) for a particular product
number, it would be unlikely to be found unless there were
an entire site dedicated to that specific product and used
that product number in the site name or description.
John Q. Public has not figured that out and, rather than
disappoint him, Yahoo has teamed up with a spidering search
engine for years -- first AltaVista, then Inktomi and now
Google.
So, when you are looking for a Web site, think directory
(although Google does an excellent job if you have the
business name or site title). When you want more detailed
information think spider (although Yahoo teams up with the
leading spider to provide that level of search, also).
