Unfortunately, there's little you can do. My clients pay
me to stay on top of these things and I use specialized
programs to begin to remind me 1 month before the domain
is about to expire and to get ready to pay the bill.

On the other side of the coin, there are both services and
other programs that monitor when a domain is about to expire
and to quickly, and sometimes automatically, register that
expired domain. You do have legal recourse if that domain
name is part of your trademark.

If the domain name is up that high in the rankings, more
then likely the new owners will do their best to keep it
up there too. It will take you months and months of
repetitive effort just to contact the major engines
and directories and pray someone listens.
