We have had similar experiences as well. In fact we
received FINAL NOTICES without even receiving the
customary e-mail and snail mail reminders that
we used to receive.

After several unsuccessful go-arounds with "Customer
Service" we decided to do something about it by
switching registrars on several of our domains
from Verisign to a so called Discount Domain
Registrar (who already was the Registrar for a
dozen of our other domains). Not only did we save
about $15 per domain per year but now we can also
manage all of our domains through a web interface.
Most importantly, the transfer process was amazingly
smooth and painless. This is certainly one alternative,
especially for domains that you might own that are not
"active".
