Matt,

I would like to offer my perspective on the subscription
issue as it relates to advertising sales. Our network of
web sites started as a subscription business and I think
that has helped me tremendously in building an advertising
business.

Although paid content areas tend to have fewer readers,
they provide two important benefits to advertisers:

1. These subsribers are proven buyers and they have a
strong interest in the topic they are reading about.

2. Companies want to advertise around good content. The
fact that people are willing to pay for this information
proves it's value.

I know many of my clients would rather reach 50,000 of
the most qualified prospects than 100,000 less qualified
readers.

We have followed the advice of many people on this board
and now our site is a mix of free and paid content areas.
This has the benefit of increasing the number of unique
readers and page views we deliver while still keeping that
base of pre-qualified prospects.

I hope this information is useful. Best wishes.
