Where are you getting your stats from? While yes the
US market is dominated by dial up users, I think 80%
is a bit high. I'd like to see the source of
these numbers.

As I former producer, I can say HTML email that crashes
browsers is due to poorly crafted HTML code and
insufficient QA on the production side. My team & I
would test the output on all platforms and browsers.
The only platform which can be truly problematic is AOL.
For that domain, I stongly recommend hard coding for
text-rendering. I've never had problems with
webmail products like Hotmail and Yahoo.

As for taking longer to compose, all one has to do is
come up with a template & use it. It may take a little
more work, but the results can be worth it.

The bottom line, like any venture, up front planning
will save you a lot of headaches. Sweeping statements
won't.
