Paying for PPC

I have finally decided to use Overture to get quality
visits to my sites - www.bytesworth.com and later on,
www.amrithallan.com. On both the sites I'm providing
services, viz., web designing and copywriting.

Has someone here been using PPC services for providing
services, and if yes, what has been the success rate?
For instance, if I promote "web designing" through
Overture, is it less effective than, say, promoting
"bottled mango pickles?"

A top spot could be costly, but does it pay? Someone
told me it's better to bid for 3rd or 4th position as
people generally skip the top positions for individual
service providers. Is it true?
