Why all the tiny print?

This group was referred to me by a friend when I asked
her why so many upscale Web sites use tiny print. She
suggested I ask the group. I am a consumer, not a
designer. I recently visited about 50 Web sites for
upscale resorts and hotels in an attempt to book a
vacation. Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton, etc. I am
extremely annoyed by the use of tiny little words,
fonts I think you pro's call them. Can someone who
is a professional designer please explain how tiny
little words are supposed to impress me and make
these Webs more useful and therefore lead me to a
buying decision? Personally I find it very unfriendly.
And yes, I have normal eyesight too!
Thanks!

[Note from Moderator: Even without looking at your
email address, I can tell you use Netscape. I find
that about 40% of new web sites are nearly unreadable
with Netscape... they are designed for MSIE (on which
they are very readable) and the designer neglected
to chech the design for compatibility with Netscape.
The result is text that is so small that you need
a microscope. --Cliff]
