You can track the open rate by embedding a unique .gif or
.jpg and using WebTrends or similar to count that specific
URL. For example, I used
http://www.nema.org/newsletter/feb/track02212002h.JPG in my
email newsletter,
http://www.nema.org/newsletter/issues/feb2002webnews.html .
The graphic is a 1x1 blank image.
I create a WT report on just the path to the unique graphic
to get the open rate. For browsers to open html-based
email, a request will go to your server for any graphic
elements. I just use the unique tracking graphic because I
use the same banner header and most other graphics in every
email campaign.

This series by Alexis Gutzman has some really great tips, in
all 9 parts.
