You can actually go well beyond this by using a gif as
Catherine just explained but appending a querystring to it
which is populated with information about the particular
addressee as in:
http://www.nema.org/newsletter/feb/file.asp?e=emailaddress

And then have file.asp first take the email address from the
querystring, look it up in your subscriber database, update
the database by telling it that the person with that
emailaddress is asking for an image and then redirecting them
to the blank image.

This is essentially what the email companies do when they
track open rates of html and most of the reputable companies
do that, but you have to have you subscriber database
avaialable to them for this type of updating.
