Here's the upside to open rates, as explained by Jeffrey
Eisenberg in an article that just popped into my inbox:

In essence, he's saying that while the absolute meaning of
an open rate may be limited, it's still a useful metric
because you can make relative comparisons through time,
plus it helps you focus on the separate parts of the email
conversion chain. (He also gives some tips on how to
increase your open rates.)
