Cliff et al,
That Wired story is the kind of reporting that drives
me crazy! Jupiter wants attention so they do a negative
press release (ugly numbers always get wider reporting than
happy things) and then general media reporters who don't
know the industry intimately pick it up and run with
it.
Here's the scoop -- as the Managing Editor of ContentBiz
I cover the online subscription sales world year-round
and there are PLENTY of profitable companies.
Thing is, most are not big and famous household names.
So nobody notices them. Some are highly profitable
niche B2B publications (such as PaperLoop.com.) Some are
highly profitable entrepreneurial b2c start-ups (such as
LangaList.) A few are famous names (such as ConsumerReports,
AmericanGreetings, Ancestry, eDiets...)
I know guys in their basements operating subscription
sites that pull in $300k-$500k a year. I also know paid
Internet divisions of traditional publishing companies
such as Congressional Quarterly, who are making millions
-- profitably.
I am sooo sick of this "if it's not a household name then
it doesn't count" mentality.
Selling subscriptions online rocks and I'm proud to cover
it!!
P.S. For my notes on why Jupiter's survey is meaningless,
