Lead generation services/methods

I'd like to hear people's comments about online lead
generation services and how they compare to direct mail.

 What I'm interested in is what works (and how well) for
generating leads online to sell specific products and
services rather than getting opt-ins for newsletters. For
instance, suppose I wanted to sell products to all
independent bookstores in the country, or all appliance
manufacturers. (In other words what I DON"T want is
newsletter signups or bizop junk. I want serious prospects
for one particular type of business.

I'd love to hear anyone's real life experiences and
comparisons of online lead generation to direct mail
lead generation.
