What's the difference in ad formats?

I hope that online advertising designers and others with
expertise in this area will comment on this question:
Other than the obvious differences between online
advertising formats (e.g., size and placement of ads),
what other differences do you see? For example, are there
any differences that you can discern between the type of
content that is displayed in a banner ad versus a large
rectangle or pop-up? Are there any differences in the use
of graphics or animation? I would appreciate any feedback
on these issues. I am working on developing a typology on
dimensions for some research I am doing.
