Interesting question, since we're testing all kinds of stuff
over here.

As we launch http://www.i-legions.com , which builds
revenue-generating Branded Communities for all kinds of businesses
with user bases, we're currently working two different channels for
outbound marketing.

The first is a very targeted telemarketing campaign, done by a
professional firm. The process is that they target the leads,
initiate the calls, screen out the interested parties then hand
them off to us for follow up.

The second is a targeted direct e-mail campaign to CEO's and
marketing decision-makers that comes directly from us.

So far, what I can tell is that the direct e-mail approach seems to
be a quicker cycle. This confirms my initial thinking, in that
prospects on the web need far less education and see the need for
i-legions much more quickly than offline prospects.

For http://www.PillowMail.com we simply pinpoint target e-mail
prospects and our hit rate has been very good.

These days, I wouldn't even touch direct snail mail. It's far too
expensive with too may hidden costs. You have to produce the
materials, source the list, and mail them at least three times.

Bottom line, nothing beats knowing where the fish are before you
cast your line.
