What's going on with the Search Engines?

I monitor the major search engines and have noticed that
they have become increasingly slow about updating their
listings. It used to be the case that Google (my personal
favorite) would update its listings once every two to
three weeks. Also, it would use the DMOZ directory
listings and update changes every four weeks. In January,
I helped a friend register his site. It was edited and
added to DMOZ that month, but didn't appear on Google
until this week. I noticed that both AOL and Netscape, who
also use the DMOZ directory, are becoming slower about
updating. Previously, they updated every one to two weeks.
Now it can take over two months for them completely update.
The problem for me is quite serious. Generally, I work
with small business clients who do not understand the
complexities of search engine marketing and they do not
like to wait two months to see results. I have noticed this
slow-down corresponds with an increasing trend for pay for
placement and pay per click models. Both models favor
larger companies with deep pockets rather than the little
guy. Even Google revenue model has switched with its "cost
per click adwords". I am curious how other SEO's feel about
this trend and how they have dealt with the client's
concerns. My strategy has been to achieve ten top placement
through page manipulation and careful search engine
registration. Now, I feel as I might have to purchase
pay-per-click monitoring software...uugh!

Just something to think about,
