The return of bandwidth limits and its effect on online ads
First I want to give some of my background, I might be in
the minority on this topic.
I have been a "computer geek" for about 20 years, I was into
the BBS scene in the 80's and early 90's, and was active on
the Genie service (a "precurser" to todays WWW), as well as
the current Web. I have the knowledge and the desire to cut
down on some of what todays Internet has become (invasive
ads, spam, viruses, spyware, etc).
Now that the "second wave" of broadband is upon us (@home
is gone, consolidation is happening, the cable companies are
scrambling to see who can make the most money and heck with
the customer), the companies are going to be imposing tierd
service levels and enforcing bandwidth limits. What this
means is that broadband users will be paying for how
much data comes into thier browser and email.
At the same time, ad blockers and spam filters are being
made available to block ads and "targeted email". I
personally am using Mozilla which allows me to block
pop-ups, controll cookies, and stop javascript. All
with a few clicks and entering some addresses.
What is this going to do to the effectiveness of on-line
advertising? What will be the best way to expose potential
customers to our services or products. How can we protect
ourselves from the posible legal ramifications of ads
"stealing" bandwidth.
