Sticking it to the taxman
I noticed that the responses to my "Click Tax" were to advise me not to
pine over the good old days of the Internet. I am too young to start
telling "I remember when..." stories. My frame of mind is much more
rebellious. I believe in avoiding these new "click taxes" and developing
marketing strategies which thrive despite them. It was obvious over 2
years ago that Goto.com's (now called Overture) success would change the
way search engines work. In fact it's success made my Internet marketing
services even more valuable. Goto.com can only be successful if it can
provide results. Its paid ranking listings fail to cover every search
phrase and it even fails with popular terms. It has been forced to use a
backup source of listings from Inktomi. Achieving high ranking on
Inktomi and Google becomes an important cost cutting method of getting
traffic. Personally, I have never paid for my site to be ranked on Goto,
but it remains a reasonable source of traffic. I know that I could not
afford to pay for a similar amount of traffic from this search engine.
This is my way of sticking it to the taxman. As for Looksmart, my main
disappoint has been being forced to pay $.15 when it is much easier to
get visitors for less. I would have rather that they take Yahoo's
revenue model where one pays a yearly listing fee; at least, this allows
one maximize the number of visitors per dollar.
These are just my thoughts...
Sincerely,
Allan Pollett
