I'm admittedly biased on this, as this is a service that we offer.
The advantage of the internal comm person is that they will likely
be much less expensive than the external writer. That is probably
the only advantage, and I'm not sure it is a compelling one.
Unless you get very lucky with your in-house comm person, you are
likely to be much better off hiring an outside source with real
experience and expertise in writing copy for the Web.
There are several reasons for this. The first is a vastly
reduced learning curve figuring out what works and what doesn't.
The second reason is that an outside writer is going to be
better able to write in a perspective that your external Web site
visitor will relate to. An internal comm person may at times be
too close to your business to be able to convey it in terms that
will be easily understandable to someone coming from outside.
Let the external writer develop the copy, and have the internal
comm person go over it to make sure that they have not missed
the "gist" of it... it won't happen often if it does at all.
