Perhaps I'm missing something here, but you can work with some
publishers who will send out targeted sponsored e-mail deployed
by the publisher on the advertiser's behalf (you're not really
renting the list since you don't get direct access to the email
addresses). We recently polled a sample of our subscribers
about doing this very thing, and over 90% said they'd have no
problem with it, so I imagine it would be spam if it wasn't
done right and with the right vehicle.
