The traffic exchanges you find are usually working very much
like good old Linkexchange for banners i.e "show two of mine
and we'll show one of yours somewhere else, god knows where".
Problem is that in most cases there's:
- A complete lack of targeting capabilities
- Limited (at best) frequency control
- Simple and easy to fraud technology producing tons of non
human automatically generated "traffic"
- Network consist of "smalltimer" sites and you have no
control what so ever of where you pop up or what will be
"popped" to users leaving your site.
This kind of traffic-swap can work great but it requires a
"gentle touch" to be effective. Look for these (minimum)
capabilities before getting started:
- Frequency control, unlimited number of untargeted pop ups
absolutely, definitely decreases conversionrates and
efficiency.
- Who will you swap traffic with? Demand to know who else is
in "your" group at all times.
- Ability to "exclude" visitors from the exchange (i.e show
pop ups for non-customers only)
- What's the exchange rate? 1:1 and a small fee may give a
better ROI than 2:1 for "free".
It also might be worthwhile setting up an exchange of your
own if you have a couple of sites targeting the same audience
and inviting other "known entities" to that group. Gives more
control.
Finally, as always: measure results, otherwise you will be
lost completely, no matter what.
Please have a look at http://www.clustertraffic.com/ (yes,
blatant self promotion) we have a slightly different approach
to exchanging traffic
through pop up windows. And, yes - it does work.
Hope that gave some ideas.
