Depends on the product, but my experience and the research I've seen
indicates that once you've turned somebody off the chances are you won't
get another chance- ever.

We're struggling with usability right now, trying to repair the efforts of
a designer who thought "cool" was the important thing and who was under the
strange impression that people have time to read and think what they see on
a website. I would estimate that our efforts, which are far from complete
or even adequate, have increased our conversion rate by 40-50% so far.

We've learned quite a bit from Steve Krug's book "Don't Make Me
Think". Most of it should have been obvious, but it wasn't obvious to us.
