Funny you should ask, Jessica. In last week's issue of FrankelTips,
the lead article was about my experience with free vs. paid search
engines. In a nutshell, here's how it works for me:
For my category, the keyword is "branding". I tried paying Overture
and got nothing. So I stuck with simple site optimization, using
keyword that stuck to my own brand strategy.
Here's how things stack up, at least this week:
Yahoo: Top rank. Numero Uno. Top of the heap.
Google: Fifth from the top.
AOL: Sixth from the top.
Overture: Number 29. Which means I'm in the top 30 on a pay to play
search engine without ever having paid a penny for it.
Maybe paying for ranking works for some people, but for me, it
certainly doesn't. Even the traffic I got when I bid at the top at
Overture was worthless.
