I don't know if you've been burnt, but I would avoid such generalities.
Most brokers will do a far better job than you ever could.
Your job is to run your site, drive traffic, maintain content, fill
orders (if it is ecommerce), etc.... Do you also want to be bogged
down chasing people to buy advertising space from you?
Where will you look? Who will you sell to? And good luck selling
ad space in this recessionary market.
Brokers approach advertisers, determine their needs, and
check their "book" of places that might be a match for them.
Profit is a motive for the brokers, but so what - there is
nothing wrong with that. Isn't profit a motive of yours?
Or are you selling space for the fun of it?
If you have a steady advertiser, keep doing it yourself. If
you need to find new advertisers, and want help finding
advertisers, try working with a broker.
It is a lot of work to find advertisers - a lot of work - and
you have two costs in this: (1) the time it takes you to find
them, and (2) the "lost impressions" during your sales cycle -
the time that passes and impressions that are lost because
you don't have any advertisers.
Something is better than nothing. Make sure you get paid
something while you are out there looking for better paying
advertisers.
If you use a broker - or sell to anyone - always try to get
some $ up front "on account". If the customer won't (or the
broker won't) - remember, they are as paranoid about you
delivering the ads as you are about getting paid - try limiting
the size of your first deal until they establish a track record
of paying you on time.
