Well, surprised or not here are the facts:
1) Starting in May or June (or sometime around there), AOL started running
the paid listings from Google.
2) Starting in August (presumably when their contract ran out with Inktomi),
they started (or will start) running Google regular results. Reason seems to
be that this will give people a better reason to stick with AOL search and
they can therefore sell more advertising.
3) MSN spidered results (in answer to another message earlier from this
thread) are from several places including: Inktomi, LookSmart, Overture, Ask
Jeeves and Direct Hit. Their spidered results give you a page in section
with a link to a second page (link usually says something like "Top 10
search results"). Different searches seem to give Look Smart, Overture and
Inktomi results in different places on that first page for some reason
(maybe some of the changes in results is that Look Smart is not providing
results regularly for all search terms due to the fact that they take away
results from their paid advertisers when those advertisers use up their
monthly budget), but the Ask Jeeves and Direct Hit results are always on
this second page from the link high up on the first page that says "Top Ten
Search Results". At least that's what they were doing last week. MSN
changes a lot.
