Re: Dealing with Spam, and the genius of ADBUMb

I'd love to address all of Steve Werby's remarks, as he is extremely well
spoken (written?) and brings up a lot of interesting facts about SPAM, the
other pink meat. However, I'm afraid to respond to his novella, I'd have to
write a whole book (which I may actually do now, thank a whole lot).
However, I do have to take exception that I am actually adding anyone to the
list through the harvesting of email names on this list. At the expense of
sounding like a completely arrogant ass, (I_m actually only a partial
arrogant ass) that would somehow assume that I somehow think the majority of
the people here are the quality of people I want to read my inspired
newsletter. While there are some people on this list who are brilliant and
have a lot to say like Steve, I_ve found that 95% of the readers here are
geocities site owners who want to know how to promote their new
glow-in-the-dark radioactive condom. (the proof is in the reoccurring
discussion on CPA vs CPM). This might be why only about 5% of the people on
this list actually say anything, and people like myself account for 99% of
the retarded comments.

That being said, it does seem that he was added without permission (based
on his address), which has a lot to do with the fact we do have arrangement
with media companies to promote signups on our sites _ and I am sure more
than one of them has engaged in signing up people without permission. We_ve
gone a long way in insuring that removing yourself from the list is easy and
to the point, since angry readers do not make a good audience and have a way
of sending you pictures of their dog_s rear-end in retaliation. If anyone
has been signed up without permission and somehow finds my humor so bad and
unreadable that they felt like cutting off body parts, I apologize again. If
you get in touch with me, I'd be glad to find some way to make it up.

Anywho, one person read 20 something issues of my newsletter, sent us
comment letters for publication twice, and recently sent a complaint into
SPAMCOP that he was signed-up without permission. You have to wonder how
many of my readers are taking medication, and if I have somehow caused them
to stop taking it.

I_d love to go into an argument on why complaining about spam is kind of
silly, and have to present both sides, but I think its been so overdone over
and over again that it_s like beating a paraplegic _ it might seem fun at
the start, but then you realize you are one sick f**k. I_m a little
concerned that people are still bringing up the myth that the unsolicited
fax law somehow applies to this, since no one AFAIK has ever actually been
successfully fined on this law. I_m actually a little bit pissed that I get
20 or so bulk mails in my apartment mailbox, which is about the size of a
small bird house, that my real stuff gets smashed with that crap. I_d like
to create a special interest group to first of all get my mailbox larger,
and to please stop having credit card companies telling me I am
pre-approved, only to find out that means shit when I apply and am rejected
for having too many credit cards.

Again, I_m going to let the other questions go unanswered by me, and
maybe someone else will take the time to answer them. It in no way means
they are invalid, but just that I don_t personally have the next 6 hours to
write a response to his plethora of questions. I will admit that the whole
question of _permission based marketing vs. spam_ is a good question that
should be raised more often, because I personally don_t see much of a
difference anymore.

Thanks for the criticism, the support and the general malaise. I_m hoping
to spread some of it on two pieces of bread and eat it for dinner.
