John, one option is making use of whitelists (list of email addresses of
people you trust). Using a simple solution like TMDA, you create a
whitelist, optional blacklist and a mechanism that holds emails from those
on neither list in a queue until they respond to a confirmation request sent
by TMDA. It can also generate temporary email addresses, addresses that can
only accept email from a specific sender and a few other interesting things.
It can be a nice solution depending on your needs. See http://tmda.net/ and
http://tmda.net/config-client.html. There are of course other similar
software solutions. I mention TMDA b/c it's open source and I have
experience with it. It wouldn't even be that difficult to roll your own.
