Newsletter open rates?

Does anyone know if there are any published figures anywhere on open rates
for various types of online newsletters and mailings?

I realize there will be considerable differences based on everything from
whether something is a paid subscription with vital information delivered
daily, or just an ad sent on a corporate retailer's mailing list, but what
I'm looking for are ranges of open rates along with the types of
publications they come from.

Also, since it is (supposedly) possible to determine open rates (I wonder,
considering preview mode in Outlook.. ).. umm if anyone has ever guestimated
what the "open" rate was on direct mail pieces.
