I've also been able to pay for a few crates of beer from Amazon affiliate
earnings.

But if you manage to get the kind of large, targeted audience you need to
make significant cash from the program, then you can probably find much
better ways of "monetizing" (ouch!) that audience. For example through
"traditional" advertising and sponsorship arrangements, or higher-paying
affiliate and CPA programs.

Amazon's EPC (earnings per click) is dependable, but well entrenched in the
bottom third among the merchant programs I have running across a dozen or so
sites.
