I used to work for an association. Naturally, many of the reporters in
that industry were former practitioners, because it was a very technical
group and they needed the knowledge in order to write about it
effectively. We never charged for press people because we wanted the
publicity. After a few years of seeing people try to sneak in, and not
give us coverage, I enforced the terms -- made people get a letter from
their editor, esp. if a freelancer, and/or show clips of what they wrote
about us last year. And a business card helped too. That way I weeded
out the people who were trying to get freebies (we DO have to pay for
them, too!) and got some good press coverage from "true" journalists.
