Hi Linda,
The unofficial word from Google is that:
- they consider link farms to be spam, and penalise the PageRank (PR) of
those sites,
- if you are linked *from* a link farm, then it won't have any effect on
your PR,
- if you link *to* a link farm, you could get a PR penalty.

who appears - with some evidence - to be a Google employee / possible
unofficial spokesperson (although of course one never can tell).
These "link farms" are sites which were set up specifically to improve
search engine rankings - they're quite different to normal web directories
(e.g. Yahoo, dmoz) which are fine.
Some ways you can improve your Google ranking are:
- provide lots of genuinely useful textual content,
- get links from the Open Directory and Yahoo,
- get links from other reputable sites with high PR.
I'd suggest installing the Google toolbar (which tells you the PR of each
site you visit) and reading this for more info:
