Re: a VERY unethical practice?
" in your face" advertising on ANY medium is horrible. Pop up/under ads
take up MY bandwidth and MY computer resources about products that I don't
have any need for or even care about.
Right now I am fighting an infestation of random pop unders that happen
until I shut down IE. At the moment I have 3 ads open that I will have to
close. when a new ad pops up my browser freezes. Keep in mind that all I
have done this morning is go to one web site that I know DOES NOT use
advertising (libertywebworks.com) and looked through my email with outlook
(Using spam assassin on my mail server to cut out 90% of my spam.)
I have NEVER been asked to opt out of browser advertising (I have been asked
to opt out of email advertising). I have gotten to the point where I do
expect some spam/browser advertising. I don't like it, but, it is not worth
my effort to get 100% spam free.
I do think that most people are annoyed with pop up/under ads it is just
there is no one to report them to. You can't sue because the courts are
computer illiterate (for the most part) and it is very hard to prove that
you have been harmed. Most people just deal with it as best they can, a few
know how to fight them (ad-blockers, browser features, spam filters, common
sense browsing, etc)

Stick to banner adds, opt in email, even a flash page that you have to watch
before you can see what you are browsing. keep your adds on the page I am
browsing. you can even use pop ups as long as you close them when I leave
your page.
The only pop up/under advertiser that I have gained a brand recognition for
has lost me as a customer for good (X-10). The other adds I get seem to be
home mortgage, and online casinos. I will never use an online casino no
matter what kind of advertising I see (I prefer to gamble face to face) and
I would NEVER base something as important as home financing on an ad of ANY
type.
