I still don't understand. We get mad at people that hand out flyers on
the street, we get mad at door-to-door salespersons, we get mad when
someone sticks a flyer in our windshield wipers, and we get mad when we
are spammed. These examples all share the same common thread - it is
promotion/advertisement that is pushed on you. Pop-up ads are the
embodiment of Internet push advertising, how can you say that pop-up ads
are OK?
*Nobody* likes having something pushed upon them; some people may not
*mind* push advertising, but they certainly don't like it. How many
friends do you have that say "boy, I can't want to sign onto AOL and
click through all of my pop-up messages!"? How many friends do you have
that say "boy, I signed onto AOL today and saw this cool pop-up ad that
made me purchase brand X!"?
It takes a great amount of control and focus to properly use pop-up ads
effectively and I don't think the majority of companies using them are
exerting that control. I would actually go as far to say that the
improper use of pop-ups from the beginning destroyed a potentially
wonderful form of advertising.
