Sure, John, you are being overly optimistic, but you're right -- if you
don't try, you won't get anywhere.
I had a similar problem recently and didn't even think it had to do with
spam. On a certain website, I signed up to receive free information.
Instead of the information, I got phone calls from the company's
reps/affiliates/whatever to give me information about "business
opportunities" with them. I never received the emails I sent for (that
was the least they could do before calling me during breakfast, lunch
and dinner.). Then, not only did I receive one call, but several -- all
from different people who had my name as someone interested in "business
opportunities" with them. Ugh.
I'm glad that you had some luck with the people you talked to, but I
wonder how widespread this problem is. It may be too late to try to
control it, until somebody sues somebody and the case goes public.
