>What is new and exciting in the world of online advertising?

Depending on when you got started online, and each one's definition
of an Internet Year, I'd say nothing's new and nothing's exciting.
Flash ads. (across the screen), Borderless Popups, Skyscrapers etc..
were some of the latest innovations....
If you did not mean just formats, then well,
you can say these are some of the happenings :
- Casino ads. rule everywhere
- Growth in advertising brokerages and companies
- Selling guaranteed hits and visitors has been the new wave=20

>What are the various types of online ads and examples of respective
>costs?

- Banner Ads or Text Ads.- whatever formats they usually sell using the
CPM method.
ie : Cost per thousand impressions.
The going rates vary from 0.10$ CPM to 100$ CPM, but the
average should be around 1$ or so.

>Online advertising revenue was supposed to be a goldmine for business?
>What has occurred?

It no longer is as can be understood by your question.
Just like the tech bubble (of which Advertising was a part), it was
waiting to burst.
Companies were paying crazy amounts to advertise on every Joe's website.
There is more introspection now and the advertisers have dwindled.

>What does the future hold?

Good revenue for quality websites and internet properties.
All other costs (hosting, bandwidth etc...) going lower, ad. revenue if
even 50% of 1999 standards, would mean net profit for most companies....

>What actions are consumers taking on their desktops to filter
>advertising?

The bulk of those filtering, are using Popup-killers, and SPAM filters.
Very few are going to the extent of viewing websites without
banners through the use of special software.
