George,
In addition to the resources mentioned by Mike Dzugan try purchasing the
Search Engine Guide Marketing Handbook
(http://sherpastore.com/store/page.cfm/1971?a=home) and the Buyer's Guide
to Search Engine Optimization firms
(http://sherpastore.com/store/page.cfm/1759?a=home) -- both are availabe
from Marketing Sherpa.
With regards to your question, do not under any circumstances use software
to submit to a site like Yahoo. Hand submissions work best as some will
reject automated submits. Target your submits to the top engines. Optimize
your pages to pick up by the engine spiders. And look into keyword buys.
Whatever you do, rely upon references and research before you select a SEM
firm. Educate yourself on what it is all about so you can ensure you
receive the services you require. And do not confine your search by
geography. If the best firm for you is located out of your area, go with
them. It's the electronic age after all. I've done business with London and
I'm in New York. Go figure. The Internet's a grand thing. :)
Good Luck,
Sally Krumholz
