List Co-Registration or Aquisition
Dave,
I think Dejan Bizinger misunderstood your query. You are asking about
co-opting with a publisher to accrue leads. For example:
Suzie goes to Women.com and registers
After filling in her information she is taken to page where she can select
to opt in for your newsletter
She checks it off and opts in
You now have Suzi's name and contact details added to you list
Am I correct? If so, this is a tactic often used by marketers. It's
commonly referred as third-party opt ins. Publishers like Yahoo sell this
option to advertisers as a means to acquire customers.
Another tactic is to advertise within a newsletter or site and acquire
customers by way of a banner or text ad link. Here the user opts in
directly for your program. Alternatively, you purchase a third-party email
blast that the publisher sends to users who have elected to receive notices
from their advertisers. This is generally a one time shot as users will
need to respond directly to your campaign and opt in. And lastly, what
Dejan describes is renting or purchasing a list.
The tactic described by Dejan is risky and I agree with him. Your best bet
is to go with a quality broker who can ensure IN WRITING that:
-- List is purged and cleaned on a regular basis
-- All opt ins are double opt ins; meaning, they have confirmed their
registration
-- Get accurate demographic data and try to verify it by way of outside
parties
Like all things, use your judgement wisely and work with established
companies. Start small to test the waters. And begin to acquire your own
database so that you can mine it effectively and efficiently.
