I've always found it best to be conservative in the use of those things.
Ask again, those that stay subscribed will appreciate it.
You could make it something along the lines of...

Guess what?! <Company A> has merged with <Company B>, so that <Company
C> could offer you the best products prices etc..., if you would like to
continue receiving this information, just click here!


An informative note could mask the intentions of verifying an opt in
list.
