Alexa,
Site listing programs are not worth anything for obtaining search engine
placement. Don't waste your money on one.
As far as paying for listing is concerned, there are only a few of the
major search engine listing deals that are worth anything. Here is what
we have found works:
Yahoo -- Pay the money. Even after the reorganization of presentation of
results in Yahoo, it is an important reference that will boost your
results in spiders like Google. If you are concerned about paying the
money and not getting the site listed, carefully read and follow the
Yahoo guidelines before submitting the site. If the site is not
accepted, they will tell you why and you have time to correct the
problem or try to influence the decision. We have never had a site flat
out rejected by Yahoo.
Open Directory is still free to list with. Yes, it takes months for the
listing to be made, but once it has happened you will find there is a
boost to your placement in the spiders again.
Google and AltaVista are still free to list with, list there.
Consider LookSmart. If good placement in MSN is necessary LookSmart is a
good way to get in there. Your client can budget how much they are
willing to spend per month -- as little as $15.
Don't worry about the other spiders -- they'll find you.
If time is of the essence, we often will do a short term program with
Overture to start getting traffic to the site until the site reaches the
position in results that we are looking for.
One more thing; this strategy takes skill in writing good titles and
keywords, because that is all you have to work with for directories and
Overture. Your description needs to be rich in keywords, but also needs
to sell to the human reader.
If you do want a search engine submission tool, Web Position Gold is the
only one I would recommend.
