Interactive media billing issues

I live and work in Japan, doing odds and ends - one of which is academic
research for a large ad company. Being 'next to' the business, rather
than 'in' the business, I'm often stumped - here is my latest: how have
ad companies and their clients in the US dealt with the billing issues
of new, more 'interactive' media? Have new billing terms been coined as
line items? How do clients account for the new use of the internet in
the expense reports? Have new departments or sections within a
department been created to deal with 'interactive' promotion within the
client corporation? My boss is probably interested because he'll want to
mimic whatever happens in the US - I'm interested in the broader
implications. If a new position(s) has been created within the client
organization, has it replaced or co-opted other responsibilities? What
other roles have sufferred?

If this topic interests any of you, I'd love to hear what you have to
say!
