Hello,
Although Bob's point is described quite radical, there is some truth in
it. You don't earn anything if you're starting out a website with
advertisements nowadays.
I am the (happy?) owner of a quite popular website which attracts
approximately 200,000 pageviews every day. However, I have totally given
up on advertising. It simply does not pay anymore nowadays, unless you
are big enough to have your own ad force and can sell traffic targeted.
The problem is, the internet users nowadays are way too used to having
everything for free. All websites are available at no cost for them. But
why would advertisers get ripped off by publishers, while their visitors
don't bring them any money? That is why the prices are so low. And that
is where it needs to change.
The trick is, the person who actually gets the information should pay,
or at least pay a part, of the information. I currently let my members
subscribe for a fee of $1 for 4,000 pageviews. That way I am guaranteed
to earn $0.25 CPM (which is enough for me) , and I don't rip off any
advertisers of which my users wouldn't buy anything in the first place.
Regards,
Leon Mergen
