Hello Dennis,
Well, this question seems pretty simple to answer: because it's easy.
Heck, anyone with a bit of programming knowledge could write a very
decent spider in an evening. Let it run for a few days, and you have a
few hundred thousand email addresses.
Then, you can sell those services (sending the spam) at unknowing
companies who think "wow, 2,500,000 million people read my message! That
has GOT to be worth it" and the spammer earns easy money.
