Phil, you're right about the difficulties of getting search engine traffic.
But there are numerous other ways of getting visitors to your retail site,
such as links, affiliate programs, viral marketing, word of mouth, offline
marketing etc. etc.

Losing the search engine game doesn't mean losing the e-commerce game,
though it does make it harder.

I recently did case studies of a couple of commerce sites who reported
increases in visitor-to-customer conversion rates of up to 40% solely
attributable to displaying a 3rd-party logo certifying the site was "hacker
safe."

See, for example:

(I'm not affiliated with either the sites or the certification service and
was writing as an independent journalist).
