Using the subdirectory you can easily handle misspellings (with a custom
404 page), whereas subdomain misspellings would be presented with a DNS
error page.

Subdomains make it easiler to handle different server technolgies as
they can be more easily be run on different servers.

Personally I prefer the subdirectory method as I think appears more
organised.
