Well Jim, it HAS been hard the last couple of years to significantly impress
any routined internet user. The question is good, although I don't think
the internet's aim is to thrill people. I'm not sure, whether, in your
question, you are referring to technological innovations on the web or
creative services. Both can make great impressions on users, but I suggest
you go a little bit into the latter one.
Have a look at the public sector. Obviously, the private sector has been
out there real strong, taking the big steps. But governments have a huge
potential in making our lives easier via the internet. If the Hungarian
government got itself together and made it possible for me to pay taxes,
inquire about information, renew my driver's license, apply for grants, etc.
online, they would save me several hours of travel and waiting in line and
many Forints (that's our currency) of fines each month. Now that would be
something, MAKING LIFE EASY FOR THE MASSES and SAVING MY TAX FORINTS (again,
the Hungarian currency) DOING IT. Of course, many governments, local
authorities, such as yours, already offer advanced services online. Canada
and Singapore lead the pack, I bet you'll find stuff on their e-government
sites that are impressing.
Hope this helps. You might find interesnting publications on accenture.com.
Oh yea, and the things hackers can do have made me sit back and say "wow".
