Re: URL redirection implications
After 3 read throughs of your message I still don't know what
you're doing.
You need to consider why www.product1.com is a successful domain
(lots of links pointing to it?/valuable content?/etc.) so you can
do the same for www.newproduct1.com. If product1.com is already
branded and memorable, why not keep it that way and use it to
simultaneously familiarize old/new customers with product2.com?
consider these things when making the switch
-> leave old pages intact - would you rather someone see your old
site or a 404 page not found when they follow a link from external
site/search engine
-> ask webmasters to update their links from www.product1.com to
www.newproduct1.com AND add product2.com as well (tip: search
google.com for "link:product1.com" to see who has links to you)
-> set up redirects - a permanenet redirect (301) will tell the
search engine that the information has been moved) depending on
the complexity of your site, this may be easy or rather difficult
I'll guess you're on apache server, if so here's a good start point
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/mod/mod_alias.html#redirect
-> if you change the content, the engines will know. They point to
product1.com for a reason.
