Re: Advertising in Downloads
Hi Loren and all,
We have spent much time researching sponsored software - Listed
below are pro's and con's of what we've found and a variation on software
sponsorship with a new approach.
Pro's -
* Sponsoring software is a unique way of advertising - unique, so catches
more attention that regular banners and such
* Very good for websites looking to attract general type of audience - you
get a sampling of the general population out there
* If you are big enough and can run enough ads, it is great for branding and
site recognition. (If you can afford to display enough ads or solo sponsor
a certain software)
Con's -
* Most sponsored software attract general audience, which doesn't help you
if you are looking for targeted visitors. (It is best to find software that
attracts your target visitors, but this can be difficult and targeted can
also be more costly)
* Sponsoring software could be very expensive, especially if you want to
have your name seen over and over by the same users (to create a
relationship).
* Many of these softwares, even the "big" ones, are spyware, which end-users
don't like. Many even trick users into downloading the software and don't
offer uninstall options. You don't want to ruin your company's reputation
by advertising on spyware.
* You only get limited exposure (usually just a banner, which people are
known to ignore). Most of the prominent exposure is saved for the software
company itself.
We have a new product that is a "twist" on software sponsorship. Instead of
just sponsoring a software, you actually customize it yourself with your
promotional materials and useful content. The product is called PromoClock.
It is a 3D animated desktop clock that can be customized in your own way to
attract your specific audience. You choose the 3D animated clock model to
match your site theme, you use your logo as the desktop icon, you add your
website links, banners, text messages, etc. In addition, you can preload
the clock with time-sensitive alarm messages that pop up at designated dates
and times. You can preload with alarms that your target audience will
appreciate. For example, you can create alarms that display daily tips
related to your site content, you can display daily/weekly coupons for your
product, you can create alarms to count-down to a special event. All alarms
are preloaded, so there is no spyware at all.
After you customize, you give the clocks away on your website as a free gift
to your website visitors. Most websites have very little return traffic, by
giving them a free clock, you develop a relationship with your visitors.
Clock users remember your website and visit often. You can also
joint-venture with related websites and ask them to distribute these free
clocks to their site visitors.
