Private label PPC engine

With so much happening on the PPC scene, One of my clients, a web
publisher with considerable traffic [over 30 million impressions monthly],
is looking to supplement his current media revenues with a pay per click
advertising model.

He is examining launching a private label PPC engine on his own site
with listings on all his content pages vs signing on with an existing PPC
engine and putting their tags on all pages.

First cut pros include Niche advertisers better rates, no sharing of
revenues, direct touch with clients whereas Cons include lesser reach,
lesser no. of advertisers, development of the technology.

Has anybody already tried this for a large website...what makes sense ?

If you make bidding an automated procedure, will clients signup on their
own or require extensive sales calls?

Can a combo-deal be done with an existing PPC engine ?

Thanks for the information
